Abstract: 

In this research, mesoprous compound MCM-41was synthesized by using CTAB as template and TEOS as silica source. In order to increase the adsorption capacity, the surface of the synthesized adsorbent was modified by 3-aminipropyletrimethoxysilane. The structure of the adsorbent was studied by XRD, IR, BET and TG-DTG techniques. For removal of cerium ion from aqueous solutions, NH2-MCM-41 adsorbent was employed. The effect of experimental conditions including pH, initial cation concentration, contact time and temperature were investigated. Maximal adsorption capacity was obtained at ph=6.

Abstract: 

CERIUM IS A MEMBER OF LANTHANIDE GROUP OF ELEMENTS. IT HAS MANY INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS IN THE AREAS OF LIGHTING, METALLURGY, GLASS AND CERAMICS. DUE TO ITS USAGE IN MANY FIELDS OF HUMAN ENDEAVOR, THERE IS GROWING NEED TO STUDY THE ENVIRONMENTAL, MEDICAL AND BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF CERIUM. HENCE, THE AVAILABILITY OF RAPID, SENSITIVE AND SELECTIVE METHODS FOR CERIUM DETERMINATION IS OF IMPORTANCE [1]. AMONG DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES THAT ARE USED FOR MEASURING METAL CATIONS, POTENTIOMETRIC TECHNIQUE USING ION SELECTIVE ELECTRODES IS A SIMPLE, RAPID, INEXPENSIVE AND SELECTIVE METHOD [2, 3]. IN THIS PROJECT, A CERIUM (III) SELECTIVE ELECTRODE WAS PREPARED BY INCORPORATING DIBENZO-18-CROWN-6 AS A NEUTRAL IONOPHORE. THE BEST RESPONSE CHARACTERISTIC WAS OBTAINED USING THE COMPOSITION (W/W%) OF NITROBENZENE (AS PLASTICIZER): PVC: SODIUM TETRAPHENYLBORATE (AS AN ANION EXCLUDER): DIBENZO-18-CROWN-6 IN THE PERCENTAGE RATIO OF 63.0: 30.0: 2.0: 5.1. THE ELECTRODE EXHIBITS SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCED RESPONSE TOWARD CERIUM IONS OVER A WIDE CONCENTRATION RANGE WITH A GOOD NERNSTIAN SLOPE. THE DETECTION LIMIT OF THE ELECTRODE WAS 9.7×10-7 M. THE EFFECTS OF THE PH AND POSSIBLE INTERFERING IONS WERE INVESTIGATED. THE PROPOSED ELECTRODE WAS SUITABLE FOR USE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS IN A WIDE PH RANGE OF 1.0-10.0 AND REVEALED A GOOD SELECTIVITY TOWARDS CE3+ION OVER A WIDE RANGE OF METAL CATIONS. IN ADDITION, THIS ELECTRODE WAS SUCCESSFULLY USED FOR THE DETERMINATION OF CE3+ IN REAL SAMPLES.

Abstract: 

In-situ polymerization method was adapted to prepare a novel tin cerium phosphate-polyaniline nano composite ion exchange material. The physico-chemical properties of the material were determined using Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). X-ray diffraction study showed that the composite material formed is highly crystalline in nature, whereas its inorganic counterpart, tin cerium phosphate is amorphous in nature. The composite was formed in the nano range. SEM image of the composite depicts its needle-like morphology. The pH titration studies revealed bifunctional strong acid behavior of the exchanger. The newly synthesized composite materials exhibit better ion exchange capacity as well as better thermal and chemical stability than known materials. The material was found to be highly selective for toxic heavy metal ions like Pb(II) based on distribution studies, . The material also demonstrated good adsorbent capability for organic pollutants like dyes from an aqueous solution. The proton conducting behavior of the nano composite was studied using a solatron (1255B FRA FI1287 Electrochemical Phase) impedance analyzer and showed proton conductivity of the order of 10-3 S cm-1. The antibacterial activity of tin cerium phosphate-polyaniline was explored against staphylococcus aureus. The results confirmed the bacteriostatic nature of the material.

Abstract: 

In this paper, conventional SAPO-34 and Cerium Hierarchical SAPO-34 zeolites are synthesized using a hydrothermal method for methanol-to-propylene (MTP) reaction. The Ce-H-SAPO-34 catalyst shows a slightly larger crystal size, bimodal pore size distribution (microporous and mesoporous) and lower surface acidity compared to conventional SAPO-34 catalysts. According to these physicochemical properties and the previously suggested reaction mechanisms on the conventional SAPO-34 catalyst, a new reaction network is introduced for Ce-H-SAPO-34 catalyst. This was based on the data collected from a catalytic micro reactor in the temperature range of 390-450° C and at atmospheric pressure. The lumped kinetic model and the reaction rate expression have been introduced by considering the reaction network. The parameters were then estimated based on the experimental data using genetic algorithms. Comparing the experiments with the predicted data suggests a good correlation between the experimental data and the model.

Abstract: 

Fenitrothion (C9H12NO5PS) and butachlor (CI7H26CINO2) are widely used in agricultural fields as pesticides. Liquid liquid extraction (L.L.E) with dichloromethane ,liquid liquid microextraction and Cl8 solid phase extraction (SPE) techniques are used for extractin of liquid samples.The samples are analyzed by GC/MS-EI ,GC/MS-CI and selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode for quantization. The limit of detection (LOD) is 10 ng/l with sim mode at m/z 125 fenitrothion and 15 ng/l at m/z 176 butachlor .The relative standard deviation for fenitrothion and butachlor is 3.5 and 8.5 % respectively (n=5).The concentration of fenitrothion and butachlor in September was higher compared to December and April 2001.

IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE EFFECT OF CERIUM ION ON THE STRUCTURAL STABILITY OF PROTEINS, UREA- INDUCED UNFOLDING TRANSITION OF HUMAN SERUM ALBUMIN (HSA) IS CHARACTERIZED BY UV- VISIBLE SPECTRA. SOLUTIONS FOR EXPERIMENTS WERE PREPARED FROM STOCK SOLUTIONS OF PROTEIN AND SALT (CECL3) PREPARED IN PHOSPHATE BUFFER (PH7.4). THE CONCENTRATION OF PROTEIN AND SALT WERE 2 MM AND 64 MM, RESPECTIVELY. THE COMPLEX SOLUTIONS WERE INCUBATED FOR ENOUGH TIME (>6 H) AT 25°C. ON THE CHEMICAL DENATURATION EXPERIMENTS, TO A STOCK PROTEIN SOLUTION, DIFFERENT VOLUMES OF UREA SOLUTION (6M) WERE ADDED TO OBTAIN THE DESIRED CONCENTRATION OF DENATURANT. OUR RESULTS PROVIDE EVIDENCE THAT THE CERIUM IONALTER THE UREA-INDUCED UNFOLDING PATHWAY OF HSA. FURTHERMORE, THE CHANGE OF FREE ENERGY (DGH2O), THE MIDPOINT OF CHEMICAL DENATURATION (CM) AND THE SOLVENT- EXPOSED SURFACE (M) DURING THE UREA- INDUCED UNFOLDING PROCESS HAVE ALSO BEEN OBTAINED TO CHARACTERIZE THE EFFECTS OF CERIUM ION ON THE CONFORMATIONAL STABILITY OF HAS [1-4]. THE VALUE OF M IS INCREASED IN THE PRESENCE OF CERIUM ION, INDICATING THAT THE SOLVENT-EXPOSED SURFACE OF THE HSA MOLECULES IN THE UNFOLDING PROCESS IS MORE THAN THAT OF HSA WITHOUT LANTHANUM ION. THE CM AND DGH2O FOR THE HAS WITH CE3+ ION[CM =1.90/M AND DGH2O =7.78 KJ.M-1 RESPECTIVELY] IN THE UNFOLDING PROCESS ARE ALL INCREASED WITH RESPECT TO THAT OF HSA WITHOUT CERIUM ION [CM.=1.58/M AND DGH2O=7.02 KJ.M-1] THIS IS SHOWN THAT THIS ION UNSTABLE TERTIARY STRUCTURE OF HSA. INSTABILITY OF HSA STRUCTURE IS A BAD SIDE EFFECT OF USING CE3+ COMPOUNDS AS ANTI EMETING DRUG. [5].

Abstract: 

Seven different samples of an inorganic ion exchanger, cerium phosphate, suitable for column use have been prepared under varying conditions. The property of these exchangers has been characterized by Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy. These exchangers are stable in water, dilute mineral acids, ethanol, methanol, acetone and ether. However, in concentrated HCl and HNO3 they decompose. They retain about 50% of their exchange value after drying at 80 C, and can be regenerated twice without any decrease in exchange capacity. The distribution coefficient measurements for alkaline earth metals, tellurium, iodine and molybdenum using these seven ion exchangers were studied. This revealed the relative affinity for each exchanger, where the sorption in general was most effective at pH 6-8. The titration curves of cerium phosphate (disodium) with alkaline earth metals showed that the selectivity sequence Ba2+>Sr2+>Ca2+>Mg2+ is observed. Furthermore, it could be deduced that the adsorption of alkaline earth metal cations greatly depends on the cation. These studies have also shown that cerium phosphates with divalent ions are strongly preferred to monovalent ones. Therefore, as for the cerium phosphates with large monovalent ions, the lack of exchange for Ba2+, Mg2+ or other alkaline earth metal ions should be essentially due to steric hindrance and this could include any one of the following: the large crystalline radius of metal ions or large hydrated ionic radius and high energy of hydration for other divalent ions. Three binary separations of TeIV - MoVI , TeIV - I1 and MoVI - Il has been developed and the recovery ranging from 90 to 100% has been achieved on cerium phosphate (disodium) columns.
